The Azure Spire Rises
Between Life and Death lies the Spire



The call for aid came forth from the fishing village of Curland’s Harbor, and the druid Robard and cleric Hawthorn answered. A mysterious blight afflicts the village’s seas, and orc raiders strike at merchants and villagers alike from the deep woods nearby. While unable to find the source of the attacks, contact with a disillusioned orc raider yielded the horrible truth that these orcs were no mere pillaging warband, but man-eaters. On an expedition scouring the forest, Robard and Hawthorn came upon a group of orcish scouts, riding savage worgs. As the cleric and druid stalked the orcs, a wave of arcane energy burst forth from the base of the mountains, cutting a swath toward the coast and leaving all living things withered in its path.

Nearby, Regulus and Jak emerged from an underground cavern, making their escape from The Slave Pits of Drazhu. They find that the landscape around the entrance to the pits has been blighted by the Great Working of Drazhu, the power-mad lich, the source of the arcane energy witnessed by the two orc-hunters. Regulus and Jak barely have time to react before the worg riders turn to attack…


  • The adventurers engage the orc scouts with steel and divine magic
  • Robard evades an orcish sword by quickly shape-shifting into a snake
  • Hawthorn invokes the power of his lord, Krugon the Bleak, causing a boulder to take on the aspect of a hideous predator, terrifying a worg and sending it scurrying
  • As Regulus slays an orc, a crystalline, blue tower rises from a promontory on the coast with the shrieking of a thousand tortured souls
  • Jak: “Does that happen every time you kill something?” Regulus: “NO.”
  • As the Spire thrums with power, each of the heroes feels its cold touch. Robard shudders as an ancient voice whispers in her ear: “trust none of them”
  • One of the dead orc riders carries a crude map – the raiders are documenting the town’s defenses, and striking from an old, forgotten keep deep in the woods
  • Returning to the village of Curland’s Harbor, the party finds the villagers panicking, barricaded within their homes, terrified by the sudden appearance of the Spire
  • Questioning the local barkeep, Herb Curland, at the Galloping Goat, the adventurers discover that the Azure Spire is an ancient weapon from the Mage Wars with a connection to life and death
  • Regulus accidentally cripples a villager as the Spire’s energy wells up within him
  • A mysterious elf — the only patron of the bar not in a state of drunken fear — observes with a smile, and slips away. Could this be the infamous outlaw Atraxus Fain?
  • Hawthorn reaches out to the spirit of a dead orc raider and learns that the warband wasn’t seeking the spire, but it has some strong connection to the dead
  • As the cleric slips from his trance, the party turns to respond to screams from the village center…

Other notes:

  • Regulus, Hawthorn, and Robard once retrieved the Amulet of Tythonus together, an artifact that was rumored to contain the secret of eternal youth, but was stolen by a thief of unknown origins shortly after its hard-won recovery
  • Robard’s blood has healing properties – Regulus learned this in a time of great need, and still struggles with reconciling this pagan devilry with his faith in Zorica
  • The village of Curland’s Harbor is home to the outlaw Atraxus Fain, whom Jak has had dealings in the past (a matter of a stolen wife)
The Slave Pits of Drazhu
Our story begins...

Captured and put to hard labor by the mad lich Drazhu, the devout paladin Regulus, the cocksure thief Jak, and the inscrutable wizard Hithrand face endless days of toil in subterranean slave pits. When the lich’s eldritch workings cause an earthquake, the opportunity for escape presents itself…


  • Hithrand reconnecting with the ether, and slaying the goblin task-master with an accurately-targeted magic missile
  • Battles with orcs and a giant spider
  • The retrieval of the Bloody Mantlet of Krandor, made brand-new through a minor (but stylish) cantrip from Hithrand
  • A perilous journey across a giant spiderweb spun over a bottomless chasm
  • Regulus fending off assassin vines by shattering a lantern full of fire beetle oil
  • A confrontation with the party’s jailor, the lich Drazhu, in which Jak’s attempt to embrace his former employer goes poorly, and Hithrand managing to augment his spells by tapping into the magical ritual of Drazhu’s Great Working
  • Regulus ending Drazhu’s plans by beheading the unholy creature with his halberd; the resulting outrush of energy turning the weapon to dust in his hands
  • The hoard of the lich: treasures including the Book of the Planes, a shining shortsword, the holy icon of the village Regulus is sworn to protect, and two dull gems (pried from the statue of some forgotten god)
  • The party emerging from their months of servitude, filthy, beaten, but unbowed, to find that Drazhu’s Great Working has blighted the landscape for miles. A town lies to the west, with the Shallow Sea beyond…
